Throughout the year
We are a diverse bunch mostly focused on middle distance and longer distance running at the moment. We have runners who train and compete at all distances from 800m to ultras. We run track, cross country, trail and road. In New Zealand, we tend to race track in the summer and cross country in the winter. There are autumn marathons (Rotorua) and spring (Auckland) but there are road and trail races throughout the year. As an Owairaka member, you can access and compete in interclub races through Athletics Auckland and at national and international level. One of the highlights of our club is the New Zealand Road Relays which are the first weekend in October. The club has a rich history in this event.
We train as a squad throughout the year on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6pm. Meet at 5.55pm at the Lovelock Track. Sessions are up to 90 minutes. All are welcome - whatever your speed or ability - see COACHING for more details.
Our runners also join up outside these sessions and train together. Check out our Strava page to see what our squad are up to or flick us a message: https://www.strava.com/clubs/owairaka-athletics
And we have the Owairaka parkrun on Saturday mornings at 8am from Owairaka park, just off Owairaka Ave.
We have a series of Club Races through the year:
King of the Mountain - June
Cross Country Championships - July
Owai 5 Mile and Club Road Champs - November 15th 2020
Joe Giles Mile and Prizegiving - October
Summer Season (Oct - Mar)
We hold a weekly Wednesday night Smiths Sports Shoes 5k in the Park Summer Series starting at 6.15pm through the summer. The course takes in the Lovelock Track and wider War Memorial Park, with 2.5 and 5K options available. Registration from 6.00pm.
We also run informal track meets through the year - perfect if you've never tried racing on the track before and want to give it a go.
