Matariki King and Queen of the Mountain 2023

Updated: Jun 25

Thanks everyone who came along to run up our little maunga, eat soup and spend their Matariki holiday with us.

What a race. For the men there was a new race record - a blistering 16:37 by Mariano Piagentini. Mariano ran the first kilometre with Julian Ng and then pulled away on the hill to finish well clear. Julian was second and Tom Mowbray 3rd - his first outing in his new Owai singlet. Stella Hammond is our Queen of the Mountain running 19:17 and finishing with a decent lead from Ruth Gluckman and Clare Lund.

Ayawa Sotome was first junior 5k female runner. Ryder Tafferner from Oratia, first junior man. Mackenzie Brent won the 2.5k Tamariki race and Maelee Sotome was the first girl.

Thanks to the whole team at Owai for another great event. Kate and Pete - your soup was fantastic on a chilly winter's afternoon. Kate, Pete and Julie on the finish line sorting the results. Simon Aspden taking pics - there are lots more here: Facebook Album. Bazyl starting the race up the mountain and manning the summit. Helen for videoing and Syd Morrow marshalling the bridge.
