About the Event

A big Haere Mai to the Owairaka Athletics 5 Miler - 2022 edition! Steeped in tradition, this is possibly the only remaining 5-Miler distance race in New Zealand. This event is an historic race with roots back to the 1960s. The first name on the Bill Baillie Trophy which was up for grabs was Ivan Keats, dated 1962. Ivan started life as a steeplechaser and then turned to the marathon. He ran 2:18 which earned him a run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Ivan sadly passed away in August 2020. Since then there have been an impressive list of great runners to have adorned the trophy- J Walker. B. Baillie, A. B. Magee. R. Maddaford. J. Julian. K. Ryan. J. Bowden. A. Audain. D. Warrander. H. Carson. J. Jackson. The Pat Munro Cup awarded to the fastest woman on the day is a newer trophy held from 2019 and 2020 by Bethany Bromfield. 2020 Male winner Cameron Graves created history in smashing the long standing 25 minutes time barrier, finishing in a blistering 24:03. Cameron was fresh from winning the Auckland Half Marathon just 2 weeks earlier. The race will take place at Lovelock Track Mt Roskill on Sunday 13th November 2022. There are cash prizes for 1st male/ female overall, 1st masters male/ female, and also a $250 bonus for the first male under 25 minutes, and female under 28 minutes. Along with the 5 Miler distance ($30 entry), there is also a 5km race ($20 entry), and a Kids 2.5km ($10 entry), event, so all the family can take part on the day! Children under 16 years as at 31 December 2022 are charged $10 for any distance.

We will have food, coffee, music, a legendary Owairaka bake sale, games on the infield and merchandise for sale. Fun for all the family.

So sign up to run, and bring the whole family along for a fun morning out with the friendly Owairaka whanau. We look forward to seeing you all!
